John Thomas Head, 71, passed away suddenly on July 16, 2015. He leaves behind his broken-hearted wife of 48 years, Carolyn Head, and his 3 children, Anne (Edward) Gutshall, John T. (Michelle) Head III and Patrick (Kathleen Kent) Head, as well as 7 grandchildren, John T. Head IV, Sam Gutshall, Shelby Head, Claire Gutshall, Joshua Head, Suzette Head and Lucy Head. Also surviving him are 2 brothers, James Head of Pittsburgh, PA and Joel Head of Mt. Pleasant, SC and 2 sisters, Judith Segal of Schaumburg, IL and Jane Turner of Upper Sandusky, OH.
John was born on June 5, 1944 in Milwaukee, WI, son of the late John Head and the late Geraldine Head. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1966 and immediately joined the US Army where he went to Officer Candidate School and served as a 1st lieutenant in the AG Corp until July 1969. He and Carolyn were married in June of 1967. Upon leaving the Army, he joined the JC Penney Co as a management trainee. Through the years he held many positions in the company and was transferred numerous times. He served as the District Personnel Mngr. in Pittsburgh and as Regional Merchandise Manager for the Children's lines in Dallas. He also managed stores in Carlisle, PA, Utica, NY, Wayne, NJ and Rockaway, NJ. He retired to Mt. Pleasant in 2004.
John was a very outgoing, generous man. He loved his family beyond measure and was always ready to help in any way. His grandchildren gave him special pleasure and he loved teasing them. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends at Rivertowne CC especially his golf group, The Missing Links, but his favorite foursomes were made up of his sons, grandsons, son-in-law and brother-in-law. John always had a smile on his face and a joke at the ready. He loved to entertain; Sunday supper with the family was his favorite day of the week. He also loved Notre Dame and was a huge fan of every team and every endeavor of the school.
John's funeral will be held on Monday, July 20. Visitation will be held at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd. at 10:00 am to 11:30 am, followed by the Rite of Christian Burial at Christ Our King Catholic Church, 1149 Russell Dr., Mt. Pleasant at noon. Interment will follow at a later date in a private ceremony. Family and friends are invited to enjoy a luncheon at Rivertowne CC after Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256 and/or to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

It has been many years since we were high school classmates together, but whenever I think of John, I frequently recall these lyrics from a musical that was popular back then.
I can still hear John reciting/singing this bit: "There is trouble in River City... trouble with a capital "T" And that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool!"
You were a fun guy to know John... You are truly missed.

I am so surprised and deeply sorry to hear of John's passing. So many memories come back regarding our time at Marion Catholic. It seems impossible to think of another one of our own leaving too soon. Photos are such a gift at times like this. May your memories soothe your grief.
Blessings to you, Carolyn, and to all your family.

Mr. Head was one of my favorite mentors as I started my career at JC Penny. He taught us to work hard and play hard but with dignity and ethics. He was a real person who happened to be a great leader. He always spoke highly of his wife and his family that he adored. My deepest condolences and prayers. He will be missed.

Dear Head Family,
I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Head's passing. Mr. Head was my first boss. He was my mentor and in the end my friend. He was the greatest man to work for. He was the greatest man to learn from and he was the greatest friend. He taught me so much at JCPenney's. When he retired the company lost one of their last great Store Managers... There was never another manager that I worked under who taught me as much as he did or mentored me as much as he did. He was such a great man. I know how much he loved all of you. I remember coming to your house for a party one time he took great care to introduce me to you guys. The world needs more John Heads in it... I hope that you will find the peace and comfort that you need to get you through this difficult time. Know that I am praying for you up in NJ and that I am so saddened by his passing too. We talk about him all the time us Penney old timers... and we always discuss how He is probably driving the golf cart down to the course like he told us he was going to do when he retired.
I really respected him. He was a great man. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about John. He was such a major presence at HCSC, it won't be the same without him. He brought much energy and humor to out meetings, as well as strong leadership.
I go back a long way with the Head family. I worked with John's Dad on the McKeesport store opening and also met his Mother there. I have great respect for the whole family.
Carolyn, Kay and I send our condolences.
