Captain Stephen Jay Baumrind, USCGR-RET, 78, retired vice president of Radio Laboratories died Monday, February 8, 2021. His private Graveside Service will be Thursday, February 11, 2021 in Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Cemetery, Huguenin Avenue. Captain Baumrind was born August 26, 1937 in Charleston, SC, a son of M. Harold Baumrind and Esta Dinnerstein Baumrind. He attended Riverland Terrace Grammar School and The High School of Charleston where he was a member of the National Honor Society, numerous clubs and graduated a year early. Captain Baumrind was a 1958 graduate of the University of South Carolina where he was a member of the Blue Key National Honor Society, President of the Phi Epsilon Pi Fraternity, member of the Euphradian Society as well as serving on the staff of the Gamecock newspaper.
Captain Baumrind was retired from the Coast Guard Reserve, having gone to Officer Candidate School in Yorktown, VA and active duty in Elizabeth City, NC. He served as Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Reserve Unit Charleston and Group Commander of Reserve Group Charleston. Captain Baumrind was a life member of the Reserve Officer's Association.
He was a past president of Congregation K.K. Beth Elohim, a past president of the Congregation K.K. Beth Elohim Brotherhood, held offices in the Greater Charleston Ski Club, Tri-County Volleyball Association, a past member of the American Philatelic Society, B.P.O Elks, Charleston Yacht Club, College of Charleston Cougar Club, College of Charleston 1770 Society, the Citadel Brigadier Foundation, a life member of the Hebrew Benevolent Society, National Rifle Association, Navy League, U.S. Naval Institute attendee and numerous other organizations.
Captain Baumrind is survived by his niece, Dawn Baumrind Mason (Charlie) of Watford City, North Dakota; nephew, Victor Allan Baumrind, Jr. (Susan) of Charleston, SC; great-niece, Brooke Simmons; two great-nephews, Victor Allan Baumrind III "Trae" and Caleb Mason and his sister-in-law, Dale S. Baumrind.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother V. Allan Baumrind.

Sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I enjoyed the many times we spent with Greater Charleston Ski Club. He was one of the better skiers in the club. He also was an officer in the ski club when I first joined. He had a wonderful personality.

We carpooled to higher parking grounds during hurricanes and shared holiday meals and our family with Steve. He was a wonderful man and when we moved last fall I saw a great sadness in his eyes as my husband Jay and I had often helped him out with doctor appointments, grocery shopping and just being

He was a wonderful man and when we moved last fall I saw a great sadness in his eyes as my husband Jay and I had often helped him out with doctor appointments, grocery shopping and just being there for him on a daily bases -our hearts are broken to hear of his passing....may he Rest In Peace knowing he was loved.
