In what would have been his 80th year with us, Bill sadly passed away in a peaceful manner in the comfort of his home with family by his side on April 29, 2021.
His Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2021 in the Ministry Center at St. Andrew's Church-Mount Pleasant, 440 Whilden Street at 2:00 pm. Interment with military honors will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road.
Born in Fountain Inn, SC, he lived most of his childhood and early adulthood in Gaffney, SC. After graduating from Presbyterian College, he started a career in banking and enjoyed a lifetime of achievement in account sales in mortgage banking insurance. He served in the National Guard for many years.
Moving to Spartanburg, he met and married his first wife, Martha Ann Walker, mother of their children, Jenny, Deede, and Beth. Bill loved all sports, especially golf. He was most proud of being part of the elite group of scorers at the Master's and loved being on Amens Corner every spring to see the "old timers" and "young rookies" compete for the famous green jacket. In addition, he was a lifelong Gamecock fan!
In 1994, Bill vacationed at Kiawah Island where he met his sweetheart and life partner, Lisa Greenway. They married a year later and spent the next 25 years making a home in Mt. Pleasant they shared with their yellow labs and rescued kittens.
He will be remembered by his children and grandchildren as a great father and grandfather, who loved them truly and deeply. He will be remembered as a man with a great sense of humor, style, and to his dearest friends - The Silver Fox or Helmet Head.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Lisa Greenway Degner of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughters, Jennifer Wakefield (Jay), Debra Dye, and Elizabeth Earle; stepsister, Sherri Bowers (John) of Charlotte, NC; and grandchildren, Anne Townsend Wakefield, Walker Wakefield, Brownlee Wakefield, Garrett Dye, Payton Dye, Madison Earle, and Haley Earle.
The family wishes to thank Lisa's employees for their years of daily love and support. The family also wishes to thank the ladies from Care for Life and the care team from Amedysis Hospice for their compassionate care. A special thank you to Diana Thomas, a dear friend, who cared for Bill and became a part of the family.
Memorials may be made to St. Andrew's Church, 440 Whilden St, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464 or to the Arbor Day Foundation's Trees In Memory Program at www.https://shop.arborday.org/trees-in-memory.

Dear Jennifer, Debra and Elizabeth, I was your moms dearest friend in Asheboro. I heard about your dad from a friend whose husband also went to PC. I was in their wedding many moons ago. Your dad was a kind, fun and may I say handsome gentleman. May you find peace and everlasting memories of both of your parents. Most sincerely, Carolyn Isley McEachern(Rob), Wilmington NC

Billy and I were fraternity brothers at PC in the sixties. I have many happy memories of our times together, but in particular I remember summer school one year where most afternoons during the week we traveled the 20 miles or so to Lake Greenwood and his aunt Agnes Brownlee's lake house to water ski. I last saw Billy at one of our group trips to Charleston several years back. He is already missed by all of us who knew and loved him in college and the many years after! My deepest sympathies to the family.

Lisa
We will forever remember Bill and pray for you and your family.
So enjoyed spending time with you and Bill going to oyster roasts and block parties, or just passing each other on the street.
He took me in as a friend and I will never forget that.

I was saddened to hear the news of Bill's passing. I greatly enjoyed our years working together at MGIC. We worked hard and played hard and Bill was just one of those guys it was always fun to be around regardless of the event. We roomed together at many MGIC meetings over the years. I moved on to PMI and Bill moved on to Triad Guaranty where our paths still crossed on numerous occasions. We both had a great love

It has been a number of years since I have spoken to Bill but he is one of those guys you could call anytime and pick up where we left off. His great wit and friendly personality will be sorely missed be all who knew him. I hope that time will heal the family's broken hearts knowing that Bill loved his family and lived life to the fullest. May he rest eternally in God's Kingdom and may God continue to Bless his family.
