Condolence & Memory Journal

Melissa and I had the same EOD date at the Salem VAMC and worked the same unit. She was a phenomenal nurse. I just found out and my heart aches. I am so sorry that you all are having to endure what must be a difficult situation. I will keep you in my prayers.

To Melissa's family ~

What a wonderful, loving, radiant daughter you raised. She brought light and kindness wherever she went. My first day at the Charleston VA I was paired with Melissa, I instantly knew that we would get along just fine. I've never met someone who would go above and beyond for everyone. She was true sunshine, even in some pretty rough storms.

I am a better person for knowing her. I will always look at the water and think of her, I know how much she loved the beach. I am so sorry for your loss. She touched so many lives in her short time here on Earth. She is with us everyday, guiding us to love as fiercely as she did, and help others without judgement or repayment. She had a heart too good for this world. We'll see you in the next Melissa.

Nothing but love,
Kayla Berrios

Thank you for sharing your precious child with so many. Melissa was my daughter (Kayla Berrios) coworker and friend. Then, when I decided to transfer to Charleston VAMC, Kayla (advised by Melissa), was insistent on my living at Riverland Woods, "nowhere else". So, I'll say Melissa was a coworker, friend, and neighbor.

When I was going through transition with relocation/employment, Melissa "showed up". She was a lifesaver to many. She gave me the shoes, I spoke of at her memorial yesterday. When Kayla came to visit, so did Melissa. She loved my grandson, Carlos ... bringing him blocks, etc. She was my apartment sitter, when I traveled.

As much as Melissa unconditionally supported others, in her memory, Kayla and I have decided to support a mission on James Island. I first noticed this Blessing Box on the day Melissa was called home. On the 9th of the month, as long as I'm in Charleston, there will be blessings in Melissa's memory.

Our hearts ache for you and your family. Melissa will not be forgotten.

Love,
Susan

My sympathy Deb and Dennis, Cory, Steve and Gretchen on the passing of Melissa a beautiful, smart, talented, a "Lean On Me" type of young lady. A daughter, sister, nurse, coworker, friend willing to help where and when needed. Thank you, Melissa, for coming to my home for Thanksgivings and/or Christmas dinners and specially last Thanksgiving to laugh and eat and share a prayer with us. We "Never Have To Say Goodbye" only LOVE. "Dream On" sweet angel-see you later.

It is so hard to think something like this could ever happen and then it does and you just remember being little kids living on the same street. You will be missed.

Dear Lisa,
Words cannot express the sorrow I have for your loss. I don't know if you remember me, but, I remember you, and if your daughter was anything like you, the world is at a loss too. I am raising you all up in prayer, for peace and "understanding" that surpasses our knowledge. Please know that she's being taken care of in heaven with the multitude of those who went on before..my sister will look out for her. I am so deeply sorry..

I worked with Melissa in ACC but I met her during my new hire orientation last year. I was just starting my divorce. It was the darkest time in my entire life. And here was this little bright shining light who helped show me around the hospital and was my bus buddy. Those small acts were so appreciated and I wish I could have told her how much that meant to me. The old saying about "You never know what battle someone is fighting", I was in a struggle for my life and she was a hand that reached out to me and a smile. Thank you Melissa ;
