Bertie Wynelle Rentz Holmes, "Nelle", 90, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of James Leroy Holmes, Sr. went to be with the Lord Thursday, September 7, 2017. Her funeral service will be held Thursday, September 21, 2017 in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street at 1:00 p.m. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service.

Nelle was born May 5, 1927 in Surrency, Georgia, one of 12 children of the late Aaron E. Rentz and Bertie Hutto Rentz. She moved to her beloved City of Charleston as a very young woman and worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard during WWII and later as a bookkeeper. Nelle was active in Eastern Star, her Church affiliations in their choirs and as a Sunday school Teacher. She was a charter member of Harbor Light Baptist Church of James Island.

Nelle is survived by her son, Ronald "Ronny" D. Holmes (Martha Hood) of Beaufort, SC; three sisters: Kathleen Carter, Quillan Garnett, Merlene Hall (Vernard); brother, Sam Rentz; and numerous nieces, and nephews.

She deeply loved and cherished all her family, friends and the Community she served.

The family wishes to express deep appreciation to our Hospice Care of South Carolina, special caregivers: Liz Phillips, Marilyn Brown, Barbara Zeoli R.N., and Morgan Carter C.N.A. for their loving care and support for Nelle and the family during the latter years of her life
