Edward Patterson Blanton, Jr., 83, of North Charleston, SC, died Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at the Veteran's Victory House in Walterboro, SC. His Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, December 6, 2016 in St. George's Episcopal Church, 9110 Dorchester Road at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Riverview Memorial Park. The family will receive family and friends Monday in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Edward was born May 30, 1933 in Charleston, SC, son of the late Edward Patterson Blanton and Helen Geiger Blanton. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, a graduate of USC School of Law, and had a Master of Administrative Science degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Edward was a US Navy veteran and a government attorney retired from Department of Energy's Savannah River Site. He was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church.
Edward graduated from law school (after serving as an editor of the South Carolina Law Quarterly) and was admitted to the Bar in South Carolina in 1961 and was a past member of the local, state, and national Bar Associations. He practiced law in many arenas including private practice and US government service where he retired in 1996. Throughout his career he was active in community service including legal aid to poor communities in lower North Charleston as well as advocating for better local government. He was active in recruiting the first local hospital outside of downtown Charleston to upper North Charleston. Edward was at times active in his local churches and enjoyed Cursillo and Kairos Prison Ministry.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth K. Blanton of North Charleston, SC; two sons, Stephen R. Blanton of North Charleston, SC and Mark E. Blanton of Los Angeles, CA; two sisters, Ann B. Mixson of Daniel Island, SC and Mary B. (Melvin) Seyle of North Charleston, SC; brother, Eugene W. (Lynn) Blanton of Mt. Pleasant, SC, as well as an aunt Vermelle Geiger of Charleston and an Uncle Robert Geiger of Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in the Charleston area and beyond. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Robert D. Blanton and his wife Joyce as well as his brother-in-law Freddie Mixson. He was also predeceased by his beloved English Springer Spaniel Thatcher.
His family would like to extend thanks and appreciation to the wonderful and caring staff at the Veteran's Victory House Nursing Home in Walterboro, SC for the loving care for "Eddie Blanton Jr." during his residency there.
