Henry was born December 19, 1937 in Clinton, South Carolina, son of the late Henry Grady Chandler Sr. and Elizabeth Brunelle Horton Chandler. His interest in politics began at an early age, when he was recruited right out of high school to work as a page for Senator Strom Thurmond in Washington, DC. Henry served his state and country in the South Carolina National Guard during the Berlin Crisis.

Employed by the Republican National Committee Henry directed many state and local campaigns including those for Senator Thurmond, Floyd Spence and President George Bush. He subsequently assumed responsibility for overall planning and coordination of several southern states before returning to South Carolina to settle in Mt Pleasant.

There he was employed by the Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum, where he was Public Director and Deputy Director for 19 years prior to retirement. Henry was active in the community, serving on the boards of the Charleston Visitors Bureau and the Charleston Hotel and Motel Association. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved fishing on North Inlet. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years; his son, Henry Grady Chandler III and his wife Jennifer of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his daughter, Anna Godwin Chandler, also of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his brother, James Robert Chandler and his wife Peni of Winnsboro, SC; and his beloved granddaughter, Anna Chandler Rodgers, along with many special nieces and nephews.
