Howard Morris Vroon, Sr., 80, of Charleston, South Carolina, died Wednesday, August 2, 2017. His Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 5, 2017 in the First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street, at 4:00 p.m.

Howard was born June 3, 1937 in North Haledon, NJ, the fourth of six children (five boys, one girl) of the late Anthony and Louise Zuidema Vroon. He graduated from Eastern Christian Academy and attended Calvin College. The majority of his 45 year career was spent as a sales and marketing executive in the office machines industry, the longest tenure of 27 years with Burroughs Corporation (Unisys). In semi-retirement Howard served as the office manager and innkeeper of the Battery Carriage House Inn on South Battery St. Outside of work, Howard's interests were in his love of God and his faith, as well as classical and sacred music (he was a musician; organist). But it was his passion for fishing, his love of the salt air, and respect for the ocean that provided the foundation for life lessons learned, and subsequently passed on to his children. And when his faith, family, and fishing were over, he socialized with many great friends at the German Friendly Society of Charleston.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, Johanna deGroot Vroon, he is survived by six children: Deborah King (Ken) of Carlsbad, CA, Laura Knapp (Tom) of Wyoming, MI, Linda Vitollo (Joe) of Coeymans, NY, Howard Vroon, Jr. (Jennifer) of Lexington, SC, Daniel Vroon (Kimberly) of Daniel Island, SC and Jonathan Vroon (Laura Jane) of Charleston, SC; as well as nine grandchildren, Lauren, Jenna, and Madeline King, Howard Vroon III and Rosie Vroon, Samantha and Zachary Vroon, and Hannah and Jonathan Vroon, Jr.; his brother, John (Mary) of Grand Rapids, MI; and his sister, Beth Sytsema of Grand Rapids, MI (his brothers Don, Dave and Bob all preceding him in eternity).

In lieu of memorials it is Howard's wish that each of you reading this today renew the foundations of your faith, increase your human investment in loving God and living your faith, love your family and your fellow man with greater commitment, and renew the relentless pursuit of your own human perfection, in preparation for your own eternity.

God welcome you, Dad. We love you. Rest peacefully, and thank you, for the foundations you laid in all of us, the extraordinary life you provided for us, and your unique and endless love.
