Howard Warren Krauss, Jr., 73, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, devoted husband of Kay Drake Krauss, died January 25, 2017. The family will receive friends at J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road on Saturday, January 28, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Howard was born December 19, 1943, son of the late Howard Warren Krauss and the late Electa Brown Krauss of Johns Island. He was a graduate of Porter Military Academy, class of 1962, and a graduate of The Citadel, class of 1966, where he was a member of Oscar Company and the Summerall Guard. Howard entered the Naval Reserves while in high school and was a quartermaster in the US Navy. After serving his country, he embarked upon an entrepreneurial career in the home building industry, founding Fiberglass Insulators and Carolina Kitchens of Charleston. A childhood on Johns Island fostered a lifetime love of the outdoors. Howard was an avid sportsman, loved a good story, and enjoyed developing a first-rate barbecue sauce. He enjoyed the company of family, a good book and a good cigar.
In addition to his beloved wife, Kay, he is survived by three daughters, Julia Krauss Torrey (Mike) of Arlington, VA, Sarah Krauss Krankota (Jason) and Katherine Krauss Vail, both of Denver, CO, stepdaughter Jamison Holforty DeWitt (Jerry) of Charleston, SC; eight grandchildren; sister Electa Hoyle; brother Jak Krauss (Jamie); and many nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Charleston, 4975 LaCrosse Road, Suite 200, North Charleston, SC 29406-6531 or the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406.
