Leo Junior Misenheimer, 98, of Hanahan, SC died Wednesday, June 28, 2017 after a very full and blessed life. He was married to the late Gertrude Esther Frick Misenheimer for 67 years. They met in fifth grade and were married April 18, 1942. They raised their three children in Alexandria, VA before retiring to Myrtle Beach, and then later to Hanahan.

Leo was born in Salisbury, NC on April 3, 1919 to the Late Francis Delmar Misenheimer and Carrie Bulah Trexler Misenheimer. Early in life Leo learned the value of a dollar during the Great Depression and from the age of 10 he worked each summer at his father's sawmill. He soon realized that was not what he wanted for his life's work and graduated from NC State in 1941 with a degree in electrical engineering, and lettered in wrestling. He joined the Army Air Force, and earned a degree in meteorology from the University of Chicago in 1943. During WWII he was stationed in Montana, where he forecast the weather for the P-39 airplanes being flown by the Russians, from Alaska to Russia, to be used against the Germans. After WWII he went back to NC State on the GI bill and received a degree in Civil Engineering in 1948. After beginning his career with the Army Corp of Engineers, he was sent to the University of Florida and then to Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology in Tennessee where he completed post graduate work in Nuclear Reactor Science and Technology in 1958.

He was employed by the Federal Government from 1949 to 1973. He was assigned as the Resident Engineer for the construction of the first ... READ MORE →
