Lila K Whetstone(nee Kaplan) born June 19, 1939 in Bay Shore, Long Island, New York, died October 28, 2017, in Charleston, SC.

Lila is a graduate of New York Medical University, Flower Fifth Ave School of Nursing. She started her medical career as a Registered Nurse in Laurens, South Carolina. She was instrumental in the organization and operation of the startup of Bailey Memorial Hospital in Clinton, South Carolina, serving in nursing and administration positions. During this time period she was also an instructor at Spartanburg Tech for nurse aids. She was employed at Moore Memorial Hospital in Southern Pines/Pinehurst, North Carolina and taught nursing at Sandhills Community College in Southern Pines. She served at Pine Needles Country Club as their long time nurse for youth camps. Lila also instituted a program with Samarkand Manor, Correctional Institute for Young Women, in Southern Pines, North Carolina, to prepare the young women for release from the institution. Lila also participated in a similar program at the men's correctional facility in Southern Pines. She was then employed by Humana Hospital Group and participated in the opening of Humana Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina. Her specialty became Cardiac Rehab, developing programs for the hospital, teaching it to the hospital staff and to outside organizations. She was employed by Browing Ferris to start up their national medical waste program and served as an account executive. Her last position was as head of a home health agency in Greensboro. North Carolina. She continued as a consultant to hospitals, in home health and assisted living homes living in Charleston, South Carolina. Lila was involved in multiple organizations, serving as a two time President of the Greensboro, North Carolina Heart Association, as a State Of North Carolina Director for the Heart Association and a board member of the Greensboro Cardiac Rehab Association She was a member of Junior League and a Girl Scout Leader. !Lila dedicated her life to caring for and helping people. She was an advocate for the young men and women of The Citadel Corps of Cadets and for the Citadel Class of 1960.

Lila is survived by her husband of 57 years, James, two children Dale of Charlotte, NC and De of Anchorage, AK, three grandchildren, Olivia of Anchorage AK, Lauren of San Francisco, CA and Aaron of Charlotte, NC, as well as a brother Edward of Long Island, New York and sister, Susan of Houston, TX.

A memorial service will be held in the General Pelot Summerall Chapel at The Citadel on Friday, November 3, 2017 at 2:00 pm. Inurnment will be in the columbarium in Thomas Dry Howie Carillon Tower on The Citadel campus.
