On the evening of January 17th, 2018, Vernon Lee Hines Jr. entered the gates of heaven, just as he would have wished, surrounded by his loving family. His Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 22, 2018 in the Cooper River Baptist Church, 1059 Crawford Street at 2:00 pm. Interment, Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road.

Known by those who knew and loved him as Bunky, he leaves behind a legacy of fierce love and devotion to his family. Bunky was born and raised in Charleston, and was known for his exceptional athletic ability, intelligence, keen sense of humor and a personality that naturally drew you to him. He starred as a baseball and football player in high school as a North Charleston Blue Devil and went on to make the baseball team at The Citadel. Bunky had a strong will and determination that drove him to succeed at whatever goal or venture he chose. If you were fortunate enough to call him your friend, you had a friend for life, fiercely loyal and always willing to do whatever it took to ease your burden. He was always up for whatever the situation called for. Whether it was fun, fellowship or a fight, he had your back. As wonderful as he was as a friend, his most lasting and true imprint on this world was his family. He married his high school sweetheart, and the love of his life, Cheri Etheridge. They married in a beautiful ceremony in the Summerall Chapel on the grounds of his alma mater. He was a 1985 graduate of The Citadel, and was a deeply religious man who served as a deacon at his church.

If you asked Bunky, the most important and greatest achievement of his life was the family he built with his wife. They were blessed with four loving and devoted children. He proudly coached them, nurtured them, and disciplined them, depending on what was needed, through many years of baseball and softball. All four children played college baseball or softball and he was there for every minute of every game. He was a very special father to them, who was able to correct a flaw if he saw fit, lead them spiritually or hangout and be their best friend.

He was an avid golfer, and loved to spend time on the course with his kids. To those who truly knew him, his legacy will be the absolute devotion he displayed to his wife and children, the unwavering love and support he provided them with, and the unique sense of humor and quirks that made him the one and only, Bunk.

Bunky is survived by his wife, Cheri E. Hines of Hanahan. His children, Ryan C. Hines, Bryce A. Hines, Bret T. Hines and Brittany L. Hines of Hanahan. His Sister Sandra Hoff and her husband Mike, their daughter Ciera Robertson and son-in-law John Robertson and grandchildren Zane and Alessa Robertson. His brother and best friend Roy Oglesby and his wife Karen E. Oglesby of Hanahan and their kids Ashley M. Oglesby and Austin J. Oglesby. Brothers-in-law Thom Etheridge and John Etheridge and his wife Valerie Etheridge of Charleston. His Uncle William A. Towne Sr., his wife Patsy F. Towne, Charles R. Towne, his wife Treva D. Towne of Charleston, James F. Town of Oregon. His aunt Mary M. Hines of Huntsville, Alabama and many more cousins.

Bunky was preceded by his parents Vernon L. Hines Sr. and Barbara J. T. Hines.

Flowers are welcome or a memorial may be made to MUSC Children's Hospital Fund designated to the Pediatric Oncology department, 59 Bee Street, MSC 201, Charleston SC, 29425.
