Virginia (Tata) Wharton Whitmer, age 87, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2021 at home surrounded by family. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a wonderful friend to everyone she met.
Virginia was born in Harrisonburg, VA and attended Mary Washington College. She wed her husband, Carl, in 1954 and raised their family in Greenville, SC.
While living in Greenville, she was a member of the Junior League, the Greenville Debutante Club, and the Elsie Haynesworth Garden Club. She loved playing cards and cherished all her bridge friends in Greenville and Charleston, SC. Virginia's greatest joy was spending time with loved ones in the Shenandoah Valley and Litchfield Beach, creating beautiful memories and traditions to be shared by all family members across many generations.
Virginia is survived by her husband of 66 years, Carl Whitmer; son, Whit Whitmer (Kelly) of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Barbara Connell (Rod) of Charleston, SC; four grandchildren, Mary Keller Costa (JD) of Charlotte, NC, Barnes Connell (Whaley) of Charlotte, NC, Heath Zimmerman (Andy) of Charlotte, NC, and Halley Autry (Byron) of Charleston, SC. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Virginia, Artsy, Bee, Whit, William, Rosie, and Gigi.
A private family ceremony will be held in Greenville, SC at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Project Host at 525 S. Academy Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
